HLS30-200148

Registry # 000250

VIN Number: HLS30-200148

Current Engine Number: L28-001038
Production Date: 12/74
Original Body Paint Code/Color: 301/Brown Metallic (Light Brown Metallic)
Original Interior Color: Brown
Current Location (City, State, Country): Stillwell, KS, USA
Date Registered: 5/23/2019
Original Factory/Dealer Options: Air Conditioning
Vehicle History: The original owner’s Grandfather bought her this car from Harmon-Rowland Inc in Raleigh, NC as a HS graduation present and wheels to travel to college. She drove it for those 4 years and up until she was married and started a family.

It accumulated a total of 57,195 miles and was parked for years until they did some repairs, had it professionally painted and sold it on eBay on 01/23/2007. The second owner did some minor repairs, engine work, new tires, wheels and owned it from 1/23/2007 through 09/05/2014. He accumulated 3,738 miles and mainly drove it to car shows where he won many awards. The third owner owned the Z through 08/22/2018, put 5,167 miles on the vehicle in those 4 years but importantly had the engine rebuilt at 61,435 miles. He had the AC/and heater repaired, as well as new upholstery, engine steam cleaned, and an Alpine radio with capabilities for SIRIUS XM, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a charging port in the location of the old ashtray space. He redid the front suspension and had the car detailed. The car was then parked in a garage on Long Island and rarely used as the owner spent many more months in Florida than at his home in Hyde Park. He sold the Z with 66,500miles to a guy on Long Island that bought it for his son. The son, however, wanted a newer car not a new old car. After owning the Z for 2 months and 250 miles and replacing the tires and rims with new, he sold it at a car show to the person I purchased it from. This individual was restoring a 77 280Z and need the money to finish the restoration so he flipped it and I purchased it with 66,920 miles in Feb 2019. I plan on keeping it as an investment and possibly rebuilding the rear end with new springs, bushings etc. She runs like a top, very responsive and a blast to drive. I had a 1972 240Z when I was 23 yrs old. It was the first car I ever purchased on my own and I drove it for 5 years until it totally rusted out on me. For my 70th birthday, I decided I needed something from the 70’s to play with. I bought this gem to satisfy that need. It is so much fun driving this Z in the rolling hills of Eastern Kansas. The Z came with a full service manual, the original bill of sale, a diary of repairs and conversations for every repair done by the third owner as well as virtually every service receipt, yearly registration documentation and years of gas receipts. The original Datsun marketing brochure was also included and a Polaroid picture taken by the original owner. I will build it back to 100% factory specs.

Vehicle History: This 1975 280Z, originally purchased by me as a college in student in Denver, Colorado (1986) from the original owner, has had quite a ‘ride’ over the last 36 years in my orbit.

Of note, the three pictures included show its various stages of history, from the day I bought it in 1986 (the gray/maroon two tune with Dunlop white walls and after-market louvers), the 2000 frame-on restoration completed by Bill Reagan after I acquired from the fourth owner in Longview, Texas. I essentially saved it from the junk yard. The third is the current state, a tastefully done resto-mod from 2022, featuring the stunning soul red crystal paint (a Mazda 3-stage process). Additional ‘story’ on the resto-mod will be available in the coming months. I will return to this page and post updates.

1986 – 1993: I drove the car as a daily driver until I reluctantly sold in 1993.

1993 – 1999: while 3rd owner had possession, the car was in two DWI accidents (not major); he had to sell it to owner 4, who then moved to East Texas and drove it for several years.

1999: In the early days of internet ecommerce, I got a bug to try and locate this Z through a site that located cars by their VIN. I called up my previous insurance agent who looked up the VIN in a filing cabinet, relayed it to me, and within an hour and $25 later, I had located the Z in Longview. I called owner, told him who I was (I still had paperwork in the glove compartment), and he sold it to me for $500 (probably $400 more than it was worth to anyone else).

1999 – 2000: I re-established my membership with the Z Club of Texas and worked with Bill Reagan (living in Lake Ozark at the time) to do a frame-on restoration, to almost factory specs. He did a fantastic job on the car. Car was mentioned briefly in a 2003 article covering the Dallas AutoRama show, pic attached.

2000 – 2005: I enjoyed casual driving of my restored Z until the commitments of raising a young family dominated my time, outside of work. It fell into a non-working state but remained garaged and relatively safe.

2005 – 2022: the non-working years. It became the (non) running joke of the neighbors, as those that were interested wondered when I would get it running.

2022: through a LOT of coordination and work my wife did on my behalf (much of which can be discussed in the coming months), the car underwent a relatively radical resto-mod, with her guidance and with me being clueless as to what was happening. Although it has veered from its original (mostly) stock origins, it has a very interesting provenance that I fully embrace. Sometimes, you have to let your hair down (even though mine is long gone).

As mentioned above, more details on the resto-mod process, its final updates/mods and the WHY for it, coming soon. More as I can share!
The screen shot titled ‘Supernatural’ is a story featuring the shop that did the work on my Z, prominently positioned in this photo (photo credit: ME).
Thankful that this registry exists!

Original Interior Color: Brown
Current Location (City, State, Country): Cedar Springs, MI, USA
Date Registered: 1/14/2019
Original Factory/Dealer Options: n/a
Vehicle History: We have owned since August of 1981. We bought it from a guy who took over the payments for his son. He asked $3500, and took $3300 for it. We are 2nd owners. We had some minor body work done and car was repainted in the original 301 color brown metallic. We drove the car all over the US with it. Car has been to the top of Pike’s Peak and Monarch Pass, both in Colorado. This was a good performing car in the mountains. after the Pike’s Peak drive, we headed home to Western Michigan. 3:00am in the morning in Lincoln NE, the clutch slave cylinder went out, tried to effect repairs in a self-serve car wash bay. Finally got it to work enough to shift gears. We then were able to make it home. We had some fuel injection issues later with this car, if you look at the engine pictures you can see the repairs. The car runs great year after year. We enjoy showing our Z at local shows. Everybody loves the car, and remembers when they had one, or knew someone who did. You can tell a Z person by the ever-widening grin as they walk up to the car. We have to admit now in our early 60’s, it is not as easy getting in and out as when we were in our 20’s. Lots of adventures and stories with our 280Z. There is a certain joy of polishing and preparing the Z for a show. The owners of this Z are Jerry & Marilyn Lomashewich. We have always been partners with the Z since its purchase.

He said he purchased it in Arizona. He stripped it down and primed it for paint, then never touched it again. I don’t have any other history, but I have everything that is original except the mirrors and one wheel, so I put new rims and tires on, until he finds the other one.

Over the past 14 years, I have conducted a full “learner” restoration performed with my own tools in carports, garages, yards, etc. No rotisserie was used, but car was taken down to a shell and then rebuilt as a restomod. Too many upgrades to list, but the notable updates include full Tokico suspension, ZRaceProducts LCAs, upgraded disc brakes, electrical system modernization with most things relay-driven and on fuses, shaved doors/trunk, filled headlight scoops (IMSA-style front end), push button start and switched accessories, full MSA/Black Dragon and vinyl-wrapped interior, full dash transplant, shaved non-egr intake with 60mm TB, 6-2-1 header with Sebring Tuning Exhaust, Pallnet fuel rail and turbo injectors, the last complete/unmolested Jim Cook Racing Cal-Z fiberglass widebody kit (purchased new from Sandy Cook’s family storage in 2008), Rota RB 17×8 and 17×9.5 wheels wrapped in Hankook 235/40/17 and 255/40/17 tires, 5-foot British Racing Green Metallic paint (2017 Jaguar F-Pace), and hidden aftermarket Alpine amplified sound system (retains original radio).

HLS30-211289

Registry # 000124

VIN Number: HLS30-211289
Original Engine Number: L28-017340
Current Engine Number: L28-017340
Production Date: 4/75
Original Body Paint Code/Color: 307/Blue Metallic (Pacific Blue)
Original Interior Color: Black
Current Location (City, State, Country): Franklin, VA, USA
Date Registered: 7/12/2021
Original Factory/Dealer Options: n/a
Vehicle History: I purchased the 280Z in 2009 when I was a junior in high school as my first car. When I bought it, the owner at the time had a hand full of documentation from the previous owner before him which included original manual, maintenance and part invoices from mainly MotorSportAuto and Tweeks.

The documentation spans from 1989-2005/2006.
From the documentation I have from 1989-1998 a Louis Spartin in Fort Worth Texas owned the car and left all documentation along with registrations up till 1998. This also listed all normal maintenance visits and high wear part replacements.

From 1998-2005/2006 a Neil Carbo who at the time lived in Fort Collins, Colorado also left behind a list of normal maintenance and part invoices (who’s was from MotorSportAuto and Tweeks). In 2000 the car received the body kit along with new interior carpet kit, bucket racing seats, mirrors, injectors and other parts.
Around 2004-2005, the part shipping addresses changed where Neil moved to Vermont. Sometime after he moved to VT and 2009 he sold the car to a Patrick Reed. It does not appear that Patrick owned it for too long as he did not have any documentation for any work or parts replaced during the vehicular in his possession.

Which brings us to 2009 to current day where she “The Blue Bullet” became my first car and love of my life. I have put a new windshield, rosters, master slave for the clutch (two times dry rot from VT winter storage), radio, tires, and normal maintenance such as brake work etc.

In 2012 I moved to Virginia when I transferred with the company I still currently work for and had to leave the car behind for the first few years. (at the time it was Green Mountain Coffee, currently it is Keurig Dr. Pepper). In 2013-2014 I was able to finally able to bring it down to VA where I have now started to save money and time (while planning a wedding in November) to start putting some money into her.

I plan to repair some small rust areas where the body kit meets the body from when it was installed and strip down to bare metal to repair and repaint back to 307 Pacific Blue. The motor runs strong and starts the first turn of the key every time. More shows some age with a little bit of leaks around heads and needs some fresh ingredients up. I plan on rebuilding motor and trans soon trying to beef up the HP while keeping it safe and a good weekend ride.

Vehicle History: After wanting a Z for about 35 years, I finally bought this one 280z in Enterprise, AL. He had purchased it from a guy in Florida, who had previously bought it in near Chesapeake, Virginia from a guy that had several (modified) Datsuns. This particular Z has had a few modifications which made me feel at ease about making it my own, not keeping it original and possibly losing value. The production date was June of 1975, which is when I was born… Now that’s a sign!!! The Z was originally dark brown but has had a Maaco red paint job, which I’ve been slowly polishing up as best as I can until I save up for a proper paint job.

Vehicle History: Purchased from the original owner, Barry Matthews, by my father, Gary L. Smith, sometime around 1990. Barry was our neighbor and purchased the car new in ’75. I now own the house I grew up in, and Barry still lives 2 doors down. My father left the car here when my parents spilt up, he officially gave it to me when I was 18, in 2002. I’m just beginning the process of getting it back on the road, and will be able to get the original experience of the car again. Unfortunately, my father passed away in 2021. I’m reviving this Z in his memory.

Vehicle History: Sometime around 1998-99 I purchased a Z because it had a Chevy engine 4 speed utilizing the Scarab setup. The body was too rusty so I waited until I could find a suitable replacement Z to swap the parts over and that is the 280Z I currently own. I drove the Z for a few years, which was a blast, then I stored it sometime around 2004-5. In 2017, I bought a 1970 240Z, to get up and running (I will register this one too). The 280Z had accumulated so much rust that I decided in 2017 to strip it for parts and junk the body. When I purchased the 240Z I miss the fact that the right rail had been repaired due to an accident. I found that out from a previous owner. The 240Z would take a lot of work to get it running so I switch plans and put the 240Z on the back burner and went back to my 280Z and began the reassembling process because I knew I had all the parts to get it running quicker in spite of the fact that it was completely disassembled. I’m currently ordering parts for the engine and hope to have it running by May or June.

Vehicle History: Imported to Australia from Orange County, California. After about a 20 year sabbatical from my previously owned Datsun 1400, the mighty Datsun bug bite again and I started looking around locally in Australia, my initial research left me disillusioned as the prices for 240/260 where crazy, so I started looking to the US, initially only at the 240/260 on my radar and then came across their big brother the 280z which as we know was only produced for the USA market and well as they say the rest is history. So I took a gamble bought a car over the Internet from a real honorable gentleman Jon who held the car for me as I proceeded with all the paperwork for the import process even though he had better offers after he agreed on mine. Not sure how many owners prior to Jon but the mileage was approximately 116 000 miles. Jon who had the car rebuilt, and had the vision to shave the rear bumper and mount the 240 front grill with a Xenon air-dam and coated it with its current paint color Porsche Midnight blue pearl. He told me that he bought the Zed to teach his son how to drive a manual but we all know the real reason.
